Trump Threatens 25% EU Tariffs, Calls Bloc an American Adversary

Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on the European Union, claiming the bloc was “created to exploit the United States.” This declaration came during his first cabinet meeting since beginning his second term as U.S. President.

Among those present was Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency, though not a formal cabinet member. Trump has continued his hardline stance on global trade, previously imposing tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. Beijing responded with countermeasures, while agreements on border security have led to a pause in penalties on Mexico and Canada.

Trump’s Criticism of the EU

Speaking on trade relations, Trump accused the EU of unfair practices, stating:

“They don’t accept our cars or farm products. Meanwhile, we take everything from them. We have a $300 billion trade deficit with the EU.”

The 25% tariff will reportedly cover European cars and other imports. Trump reiterated that the EU’s formation was primarily aimed at “undermining the U.S.”

When asked about possible EU retaliation, he dismissed concerns:

“They can try, but they won’t succeed. If they retaliate, we just stop buying. We win.”

Tensions Over Ukraine & NATO

Trump’s relations with Europe have already been under strain, particularly regarding Ukraine. He recently described Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a “dictator with no elections”—prompting backlash from Kyiv.

He also ruled out Ukraine’s NATO membership, claiming:

“That’s likely the reason this conflict started in the first place.”

Instead, he indicated that European nations should handle security in the region.

Putin, China & Taiwan

Trump praised Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling him “very cunning” and suggesting that war in Ukraine might not have occurred under his leadership.

When pressed on China’s ambitions toward Taiwan, Trump refused to comment, stating:

“I never talk about that. I won’t put myself in that position.”

A ‘Very Big’ Ukraine Minerals Deal

Trump revealed that Zelenskyy would visit the U.S. to sign a significant minerals agreement. He framed this as a way for America to recover the billions spent on Ukraine’s war efforts.

Elon Musk’s Role in Trump’s Administration

During the meeting, Elon Musk spoke about government cost-cutting efforts, but Trump quickly took control of the discussion. When asked if cabinet members supported Musk’s role, Trump joked about removing dissenters.

With global trade tensions escalating, Trump’s new policies could set the stage for further economic conflicts—particularly with Europe.
